Founder Ken Eyjolfson is available for interviews, expert commentary, and background. He can speak to mattress and foam chemistry, the fiberglass fire barrier, flame-retardant regulation, and firefighter occupational exposure.
About Embr (copy/paste boilerplate)
Embr is an independent research publication on mattress chemistry and the sleep environment — the air people breathe for a third of their lives. It translates the peer-reviewed literature and regulatory record for a general audience, scores products against a transparent, openly published rubric, and tags every claim by evidence strength so readers know what is established, what is reasoned, and what remains open. Embr was founded in 2026 in British Columbia, Canada, by Ken Eyjolfson, a 19-year career firefighter. It has no affiliate relationships, takes no commission on mattress sales, and accepts no sponsorship.
Founder: Ken Eyjolfson
Ken Eyjolfson is a 19-year career firefighter and the founder of Embr. He has spent his working life around combustion and the chemistry of what burns — and started Embr after his wife developed an autoimmune condition led him to look closely at the most porous surface in the house people spend the most time pressed against: the mattress. He brings an unusual and hard-to-replicate vantage point to mattress safety reporting — an expert on fire barriers and combustion writing about the fiberglass fire sleeve and flame-retardant chemistry inside the bed.
Ken is candid about his position: he also owns Mr. Liquidator, a mattress retail outlet in British Columbia, which is what gave him visibility into the parts of the category consumers can't see. Embr is structurally separate — no commissions, no affiliate links, no recommendations driven by inventory. Read the full disclosure on the About page and the Editorial Standards page.

Story angles we can help with
Embr is built on original analysis, not press releases. A few angles where we can provide data, a named expert, and a fast turnaround:
- What to actually do if your mattress has fiberglass. A firefighter explains the fiberglass fire barrier, why removing the cover is the trap most consumers fall into, and the HVAC-contamination detail most coverage omits. Tied to the ongoing Nectar and Zinus class-action litigation.
- The first US state banning fiberglass in mattresses. California AB 1059 takes effect January 1, 2027. A firefighter explains why fiberglass was in mattresses in the first place — and what replaces it.
- What "non-toxic" and CertiPUR-US actually cover — and don't. The gap between what the foam certification tests for and what consumers think it guarantees, sourced to the standards themselves.
- The chemistry of "new mattress smell." What off-gassing actually is, how long it lasts, and what the in-home measurement studies show about the air in a sealed bedroom.
- Firefighter take-home contamination — in the bed. How occupational exposure to combustion byproducts and PFAS follows firefighters home, and what that means for the sleep environment.
