Mostly, no. Modern laundry detergent is not acutely dangerous, and nothing in this piece should make you throw out what is under your sink. But one ingredient class is worth knowing about, because it does not rinse away, it ends up on the fabric you press your face into for eight hours, and Canada has just measured it in almost everyone.
The scent is designed to stay
The smell of clean laundry is not the smell of cleanliness. It is a fragrance formulation, and a large part of it is a family of compounds called polycyclic musks. The dominant one is galaxolide, listed on labels, when it is listed at all, as HHCB.
Musks exist in the formula precisely because they persist. A fragrance that washed out entirely would not sell. So the molecule is built to bind to fabric and release slowly, which is why a shirt still smells like detergent a week after it was washed.
That same persistence is why it turns up in people. Galaxolide is bioaccumulative, and it is the dominant synthetic musk found in human breast milk, fat and blood. Peer-reviewed — Lignell et al., 2008.
What Canada found
Statistics Canada measures environmental chemicals in Canadians through the Canadian Health Measures Survey. In its most recent cycle it measured galaxolide.

Two things about that figure are worth saying plainly. It comes from a single measurement cycle, so there is no Canadian trend to read from it yet. And "detectable" means the laboratory could measure it, which is a statement about instruments as much as about people. A more sensitive machine finds more of everything.
What it does establish is presence. This is not a compound that shows up in a few unlucky households. It is in nine of ten people the survey looked at.
Why the bedroom matters more than the laundry room
Most coverage of detergent chemistry focuses on the wash. That is the wrong room.
The dominant route into the body for these compounds is skin contact, not breathing. Dermal uptake accounts for roughly 82% of exposure, and perfumed personal products drive body burden more than ambient air does. Peer-reviewed — Luo et al., 2023.
Now consider where you have the most skin against the most treated fabric, for the longest uninterrupted stretch of your day. Sheets are eight hours of direct contact, warm, with a body that is gently sweating. If you are looking for the moment scented laundry meets your skin, it is not the laundry room. It is the bed.
This is the part almost nobody writes about, and it is why a mattress publication ends up caring about detergent at all.
"Unscented" does not mean what you think
Two words on packaging do very different work. Fragrance free means no fragrance was added. Unscented often means fragrance was added specifically to mask the smell of the other ingredients.
Musks are commonly used for exactly that masking job, which means an "unscented" product can contain more of them than a lightly scented one. Peer-reviewed — Luo et al., 2023.
If you are trying to reduce this, "fragrance free" is the phrase that carries meaning. "Unscented" is not a reliable signal.
What this does not mean
It does not mean galaxolide is making you sick. Measured human exposures sit below the doses where clear effects have been demonstrated. Peer-reviewed — Luo et al., 2023. This is a reduce-where-easy compound, not an emergency.
It does not mean regulators have concluded it is harmful. France's health agency has proposed classifying galaxolide as toxic for reproduction under the EU classification system, which is a proposal under review rather than a settled finding. Regulatory — ANSES, 2025.
It does not mean your detergent is the source. Galaxolide is in shampoo, lotion, fabric softener, cleaning products and perfume. The survey measured what is in people, not where it came from, and no biomonitoring number can attribute an individual's exposure to a particular bottle.
And it does not mean the 90.6% figure will hold. One cycle is one cycle.
What actually reduces it
The honest list is short, which is itself useful.
Switching to genuinely fragrance-free detergent for bedding is the highest-leverage change, because it targets the fabric with the longest skin contact. You do not have to change every product in the house to change the one you sleep on.
Skipping fabric softener and scented dryer sheets removes a second deliberate deposit of fragrance onto the same sheets, applied after the wash cycle has finished rinsing.
What does not help is an air purifier. Galaxolide arrives on fabric and skin, not as an airborne pollutant waiting to be filtered. Inferred Buying a purifier for this specific problem is solving the wrong room, again.
