If your couch still smells of smoke, the smell is the least informative thing about it. Odour comes from a handful of light compounds your nose happens to be good at. The compounds that make people worry are mostly heavier, and many of them have no smell at all. Removing the smell and removing the chemistry are two different jobs, and the products sold hardest for the first are the ones that do least for the second.

One of them makes the room worse while it works.

Smell is not the hazard

Smoke that has settled into a room does not sit still. Compounds move back and forth between the air and every soft surface, and the heavier ones keep coming off for a long time after the air has cleared. Laguerre and Gall measured this directly for wildfire smoke: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accumulate on indoor materials and create exposure pathways that outlast the smoke event itself.2 Peer-reviewed

Odour tracks the light, volatile end of that mixture. It fades first. That is exactly why a room can stop smelling of smoke while the heavier residue is still in the cushions, and why "it doesn't smell any more" is a weak test of anything.

It cuts the other way too. A lingering smell is real information that residue is present, but it is not a measurement of how much or of what.

Air cleaners clean the air, not the sofa

A portable air cleaner pulls particles out of the air passing through it. During a smoke event that is genuinely worth doing. Afterwards, it is treating the wrong thing: the residue is in the material, and the air is being resupplied from it.

Li and colleagues tested this in an actual smoke-contaminated house, comparing surface cleaning against air cleaning against ventilation.1 Peer-reviewed The distinction that matters for a shopper is simple. Filtration removes what is airborne now. Only surface work removes the thing doing the resupplying.

So an air cleaner is not useless and it is not the answer. It manages the symptom while the source stays where it is.

The ozone problem

Ozone generators are sold specifically for smoke damage, and they are effective at destroying odour. That is the trap, because destroying odour is not the same as removing residue, and ozone does something else on its way through the room.

Ozone is reactive by design. Weschler's review of indoor ozone exposure makes the point that the products of ozone-initiated chemistry are themselves a public-health concern, not just the ozone.3 Peer-reviewed Destaillats and colleagues showed the mechanism in chamber tests: ozone reacting with ordinary indoor product emissions generates secondary pollutants that were not there before.4 Peer-reviewed

Smoke residue behaves the same way. Petrick and colleagues followed nicotine on indoor surfaces and found it sorbs, desorbs and undergoes oxidative transformation.5 Peer-reviewed Oxidised is not the same as gone.

The honest version, which is less tidy than the sales pitch and also less tidy than the backlash: ozone does reduce odour, and it does react with residue on exposed surfaces. What it does not reliably do is reach material held deep inside thick fabric and foam, and it generates new compounds in the room while it tries. For a mattress or an upholstered couch, that is the worst possible trade: the deep reservoir is the whole problem, and it is the part ozone reaches last.

What the fire service learned about washing it out

The best evidence on getting smoke residue out of textiles does not come from consumer cleaning research. It comes from fire departments, because firefighters have spent a decade trying to decontaminate gear that is soaked in exactly this chemistry. I have worn that gear for nineteen years.

Wilkinson and colleagues tested both on-scene decontamination and machine laundering on turnout gear across repeated exposures. Both worked on the outside. The finding worth carrying into your own laundry room is what happened underneath: semi-volatile PAHs deep within the fibres of bulky protective clothing were not effectively reduced by either method, and continued to off-gas afterwards.6 Peer-reviewed

That is professional equipment, professional washing machines and a written standard, and the deep layer still held onto it. It sets a realistic ceiling for a domestic wash.

What the material is made of matters too. Bahl and colleagues found cotton terry cloth released far more retained nicotine than polyester under the same extraction.7 Peer-reviewed Natural, absorbent, thick fabrics hold more and give it up more slowly.

The practical read: anything you can actually launder, launder, and do not be gentle about detergent. Anything with a thick core you cannot get water through is a different problem.

The mattress question nobody has answered

Which brings us to the question people actually arrive with, usually after a fire season or a house move. Does cleaning a mattress remove smoke residue?

Nobody has measured it. Not "it does not work" — no published study has tested whether any cleaning method removes wildfire or tobacco smoke residue from mattress foam. We looked, and recorded the absence in the Exposure Ledger as an explicit gap rather than leaving a blank.8 Inferred

The neighbouring evidence is not encouraging, and none of it was done on a mattress. Deep fibre resists laundering.6 Surfaces re-emit for a long time.2 Volatile organic compounds were still measurable inside homes after the Marshall Fire.9 Peer-reviewed

Anyone selling mattress smoke remediation is ahead of the evidence. That includes anyone telling you confidently that it is fine.

What I would actually do

In order, and stopping wherever the problem stops:

  • Ventilate first. It is free and it addresses the airborne fraction that filtration also addresses.
  • Wash everything washable, hot, with more detergent than feels reasonable. Bedding, covers, curtains, clothes. This is where the evidence is strongest.
  • Wipe hard surfaces. Surface work is the only thing that removes the reservoir rather than filtering its output.
  • Run a HEPA cleaner while you do the rest, understanding it is managing air, not fixing furniture.
  • Do not use an ozone generator in an occupied home. It buys odour at the cost of new chemistry, and it does not reach the deep reservoir that made the smell in the first place.
  • For a mattress, accept that nobody can tell you. Encasement is a reasonable hedge. Replacement removes the reservoir entirely. Both are decisions made without data, and you should know that going in.

What this does not establish

None of the studies here measured a mattress. The laundering evidence is from firefighter turnout gear, which is thicker and more heavily contaminated than household textiles. The ozone chemistry is well established for indoor surfaces generally, but the specific trials of ozone against smoke residue in deep furnishings are a small literature and we have not independently verified their figures. And no measurement in this piece tells you how much residue is in your couch, because that measurement does not exist outside a research chamber.

What the evidence does support is the ordering: ventilate, launder, wipe, filter. And it supports the negative result strongly enough to state plainly, which is that odour removal and residue removal are not the same purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Does washing clothes get rid of third-hand smoke?+

Laundering reduces but does not eliminate surface contamination. Bahl et al. 2014 documented residual tobacco-specific nitrosamines on fabric 19 months after exposure despite washing. Rosting et al. 2025 detected PAHs in routine-laundered firefighter merino wool and mixed-fibre undergarments — laundry reduced contamination but did not remove it. For heavily exposed fabric, multiple wash cycles help. For mattresses, pillows, and upholstered furniture that cannot be effectively laundered, the reservoir persists regardless of how the linens are cleaned.

Should I replace my mattress after a wildfire smoke event?+

For significant smoke events, yes — replacement is the most evidence-supported option for items that cannot be effectively laundered. Laguerre et al. 2024 found PAHs accumulated on cotton fabric during smoke exposure, and that surface PAH concentrations on the materials tested persisted above background for approximately 40 days. A single wash cycle removed about 48% of PAHs from smoke-exposed cotton, meaning multiple cycles are needed for washable items. Mattresses, pillows, and upholstered furniture are the highest-affinity bedroom reservoirs and the hardest to clean. Replacement removes the reservoir; surface cleaning of remaining materials addresses the rest.

Does an air purifier remove wildfire smoke residue from surfaces?+

No. Portable air cleaners remove what is in the air at that moment. They do not remove the smoke residue that has deposited on walls, furniture, and bedding. Li et al. 2023 directly compared surface cleaning, portable air cleaners, and window ventilation in a smoke-contaminated test house and found surface cleaning was more effective and more persistent at reducing indoor VOC concentrations. Air cleaners help while running. Surface cleaning addresses the reservoir that is the source of ongoing re-emission.

What is the best way to remove smoke smell from a house?+

Address the surfaces first, the air second. Vacuum soft surfaces with a HEPA-filter vacuum, mop hard floors, dust hard surfaces with damp cloths, and launder all washable fabrics including bedding multiple cycles. Laguerre et al. 2024 found ethanol or commercial window cleaners removed 62–71% of surface PAHs from glass. Replace activated carbon air cleaner filters after a smoke event — Stinson et al. 2026 found these filters can off-gas at rates roughly 3 times those of particle filters once saturated. Air freshener and scent products do not address surface chemistry.

How do I get smoke smell out of a mattress?+

Mattresses are the hardest item to clean because the foam acts as a deep reservoir for semi-volatile compounds and cannot be laundered. Vacuum the mattress surface thoroughly with a HEPA-filter vacuum, launder mattress covers and protectors in hot water multiple cycles, expose to fresh outdoor air when possible, and run HEPA + activated carbon filtration in the bedroom. For significant smoke events — wildfire, structure fire, or moving into a heavily smoke-contaminated home — replacement is the most evidence-supported option. The Laguerre et al. 2024 finding that fabric accumulates and slowly re-emits PAHs translates directly.

What is the difference between HEPA and activated carbon for smoke?+

HEPA filters capture particulate matter — the visible particle component of smoke. Activated carbon adsorbs gas-phase volatile organic compounds and odors. Smoke contains both, so combined HEPA + activated carbon units address both. Stinson et al. 2026 found activated carbon filters in portable air cleaners installed at the start of a wildfire event eventually off-gas captured VOCs at rates roughly 3 times particle filter rates — replace activated carbon filters after a smoke event rather than continuing to use saturated filters.

Does activated carbon remove cigarette smoke smell?+

Activated carbon adsorbs gas-phase compounds responsible for cigarette odor. It does not remove surface-bound contamination on walls, furniture, or bedding, which is the reservoir that continues to release compounds after the air has been treated. For meaningful cigarette odor remediation, address surfaces — wipe hard surfaces with appropriate cleaners, launder fabrics multiple cycles, and replace high-affinity soft items like mattresses and upholstered furniture. Matt et al. 2020 documented surface nicotine in nonsmoker apartments at levels exceeding average smoker homes from earlier studies.

Does smoke smell mean the air is toxic?+

Olfactory detection threshold and health-relevant concentration thresholds are not the same. You can smell smoke at concentrations far below any acute toxicity threshold, and you can be exposed to surface-bound compounds at concentrations below the smell threshold but above background. The smell is a signal that combustion residue is present somewhere — in the air, on surfaces, or both. It is neither a reliable indicator of immediate danger nor a reliable indicator of safety. The peer-reviewed evidence is on persistence of measurable chemistry and on associations with health outcomes at specific exposure levels — not on smell as a hazard metric.
