The smoke leaves the air in a few days. It does not leave the house. It is on the walls, in the carpet, and in the bedding, and measurements put the useful cleanup window at roughly one to three months — not one to three days.
If your region is smoky right now, the advice you have already read is about the air: close the windows, run a filter, check the index. That advice is correct and it is incomplete. When the plume passes, the compounds that came in with it do not all leave with it. Some of them sorb onto every surface you own and come back off slowly, for weeks.
What the measurements actually show
Researchers added smoke to a test house and tracked what happened to it. Li and colleagues found two timescales: about 1 to 5.2 hours for surfaces and air to reach equilibrium, and about 4.8 to 21.2 hours before ventilation starts to win1. Their conclusion is the useful part — house ventilation plays a minor role in removing smoke compounds, because the surfaces keep resupplying the air. Peer-reviewed
The residue lasts far longer than the smell. Laguerre and Gall loaded glass, cotton and filter media with wildfire smoke and aged them indoors for about four months. Surface concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons stayed above background for roughly 40 days2. Peer-reviewed
And indoors is not automatically the safe side. Ghetu and colleagues put paired samplers inside and outside 15 homes across four states before, during and after wildfires. Indoor concentrations were higher in 77% of sample pairs3. Peer-reviewed
Two recent fire events give the timescale in real homes rather than test houses. After the Marshall Fire, Dresser and colleagues measured volatile organic compounds inside affected homes4, and after the 2025 Los Angeles fires Stinson and colleagues characterised what indoor surfaces were still emitting a month later5. So what actually works
The same test-house study compared the three things people reach for. Surface cleaning — vacuuming, mopping, dusting — reduced indoor smoke compounds more effectively than portable air cleaners, and more persistently than opening windows1. Peer-reviewed That is the opposite of the usual advice order, and it follows from the mechanism: if the surfaces are the reservoir, cleaning the air treats the symptom.
In order:
- Vacuum soft surfaces with a HEPA-filter vacuum — carpet, upholstery, the top of the mattress.
- Launder everything washable, more than once. A single wash cycle removed about 48% of PAHs from smoke-exposed cotton2. One wash is not a decontamination.
- Wipe hard surfaces. Ethanol or a commercial cleaner removed 71% and 62% of surface PAHs from glass respectively2.
- Mop floors and dust with a damp cloth rather than dry — dry dusting resuspends.
- Then run air cleaning, which helps while it runs.
The air-cleaner trap
Activated carbon filters adsorb gas-phase compounds, which is why they are recommended for smoke. But a filter that has been adsorbing for weeks is a loaded surface sitting in your house. Stinson and colleagues found carbon filters can off-gas captured compounds once saturated5. Peer-reviewed Replace activated carbon filters after a smoke event rather than running them on.
The part that matters for where you sleep
Bedding is the largest area of absorbent fabric in the house and it sits centimetres from your face for seven to nine hours. Sheets, pillowcases and covers are washable, so wash them repeatedly. Mattresses and pillows are not, and there is no good way to launder a foam core. For a significant smoke event, replacement is the more defensible option for those items — though we should be straight that this is reasoning from the surface chemistry, not from a study that measured a used mattress after a wildfire. What this does not tell you
Composition is not dose. Knowing a compound is present on a surface does not tell you how much of it reaches a person, which depends on contact, temperature, ventilation and time. The persistence figures above are measured; the health consequence of that specific residential exposure is not well characterised, and anyone claiming a precise risk number for it is going beyond the evidence. The scale of who this affects is not in doubt. Burke and colleagues estimated nearly 50 million homes sit in the United States wildland–urban interface, and that wildfires have accounted for up to 25% of fine particulate matter in recent years6. Peer-reviewed

After a structure fire in your own home
Everything above applies, with two differences. The compound mix from a house fire is broader than a vegetation fire — building materials, furnishings, plastics and their combustion products rather than mostly wood — and the deposition is heavier because the source was inside. The cleanup logic does not change: surfaces first, soft furnishings replaced rather than cleaned, and the one-to-three-month window rather than the day the smell fades.
Professional remediation is worth it at this scale. The questions worth asking are whether they address soft furnishings or only hard surfaces, whether HVAC filters are replaced as part of the job, and what they do about mattresses and upholstery — which is where the honest answer is usually replacement.

No. Air cleaners treat what is in the air while they run. They do not remove residue that has deposited on walls, furniture and bedding. Li et al. compared surface cleaning, portable air cleaners and window opening in a smoke-contaminated house and found surface cleaning reduced indoor smoke compounds more effectively and more persistently.
Do I need to replace activated carbon filters after a wildfire?+
Yes. Activated carbon adsorbs gas-phase compounds, and a saturated filter can off-gas what it captured back into the room. Stinson et al. documented this after the 2025 Los Angeles fires. Replace carbon filters after a smoke event rather than continuing to run them.
Is indoor air safer than outdoor air during a wildfire?+
Not reliably. Ghetu et al. deployed paired indoor and outdoor samplers at 15 locations across four states and found indoor PAH concentrations were higher in 77% of sample pairs. Staying inside reduces particulate exposure, but the indoor surface reservoir keeps supplying compounds to the air you are breathing.
